Before you go, planning a Hollandia trip day in the Netherlands

Choosing the dose, the week before, the morning itself, what to have ready, and where fresh truffles are legal. A planning guide for a stay in the Netherlands.

This page covers the planning before the start to waypoint 1.

Planning a Hollandia trip comes down to three decisions made before you eat anything: how high you go, where you will spend the next six hours, and who stays sober with you. Once the truffles are eaten the route is fixed. You can make the setting calmer, but you cannot make the dose smaller.

Choose the height first

The dose is the height of the route. Avalon Magic Plants, the shop behind this site, describes Hollandia as containing roughly twice the active substances of Atlantis and gives this advice on the product page: 7.5 grams for beginners, the full 15 grams for experienced users. That is the shop's estimate. No independent laboratory has published a measurement of Hollandia that we could find.

In a controlled study with pure psilocybin, both the intensity and the duration of the effects rose with the dose: mean effect durations were 5.6 hours at the lower dose and 6.4 hours at the highest (Holze et al., 2023). A higher route is also a longer one.

  • Never had truffles before. Start lower on the strength ladder, with a milder truffle, and learn how your body reacts.
  • Some experience with milder truffles. Half a pack of Hollandia, 7.5 grams, is a strong trip for most people.
  • Experienced with strong truffles. The full 15 grams, only with a sober sitter and a free next day.

Weigh the portion on a scale rather than guessing by eye, and put the rest of the pack back in the fridge before you start. Taking more later is the most common way a trip gets harder than planned.

The week before

  • Check your medication. Lithium combined with psychedelics was linked to seizures in 47% of 62 reports analysed by Nayak et al. (2021). SSRI and SNRI antidepressants often weaken the effects, even months after stopping (Gukasyan et al., 2023). If you take any prescription medicine, ask a doctor or pharmacist first.
  • Leave space after earlier trips. Tolerance to psilocybin builds quickly and carries over between psilocybin and LSD (Isbell et al., 1961). A trip a few days after another one is weaker and less predictable.
  • Pick a stable week. Strong truffles tend to amplify whatever is already on your mind. A week of heavy stress, grief or conflict is a poor time for a high route.
  • Book two free days. The trip day itself and a quiet next morning.

Picking the day during your stay

Many people who take truffles in the Netherlands are visitors, and a stay adds its own logistics.

  • Not on the day you arrive. Travel, sleep loss and an unfamiliar room all add weight to the start of a trip.
  • Keep the truffles cold. Avalon advises storing fresh truffles at 2 to 4 °C, where they keep for up to a month. A hotel minibar or a fridge in your apartment does the job.
  • Know the house rules. Read the rules of the place you are staying and choose a room where you can lie down, dim the light and reach a toilet easily.
  • Stay away from water and traffic. Canals, busy cycle lanes and crowded streets are hard to handle at the top of a strong trip. Driving afterwards is illegal in the Netherlands (Jellinek).
  • Start early. A start around late morning puts the descent in the afternoon and leaves the evening for food and sleep.

The morning itself

Avalon advises taking Hollandia on an empty stomach and chewing the truffles well, or chopping them finely and steeping them in hot water for about fifteen minutes as tea. Tea and an empty stomach are both reported to make the start faster and steeper.

  1. Eat a light breakfast, then nothing heavy in the hours before.
  2. Weigh your portion and agree with your sitter that you will not take more.
  3. Put car keys, bike keys and anything you might want to leave the house with out of reach.
  4. Set your phone to silent and put on a playlist you already know is calm.
  5. Write down the time you start. It helps you and your sitter know where on the route you are.

What to have ready

  • Water and a sweet drink, fruit or something simple to eat later
  • Blankets, a sweater and comfortable clothes: cold hands are common on the way up
  • A quiet room with light you can dim, and an eye mask for eyes-closed stretches
  • A bucket or bowl nearby, as some people feel sick in the first hour
  • The address of where you are, written down, and a charged phone with the sitter
  • Food for the evening that needs no cooking

Two practical consequences follow. Eat the truffles in the Netherlands and do not take leftovers home: crossing a border with them, or ordering them to an address in a country where they are banned, counts as importing. And a legal product is still not one you can use anywhere you like: the place you are staying sets its own rules.
